Membership Information

VFW Eligibility

The fundamental difference between our organization and other veteran's organizations is our eligibility qualifications. There are three requirements for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Honorable Service in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Service entitling the applicant to the award of a recognized campaign medal, or as set forth in the VFW Congressional Charter or VFW bylaws. The only exception for service is serving in Korea for 30 or more consecutive days or its territorial waters after June 30, 1949, until present.

If an applicant claims entitlement to a medal not shown on the individual's separation papers, that person may request verification and correction of records by submitting a Standard Form 180, (Request Pertaining to Military Records). Form 180 also may be used to replace lost separation documents.

To request your military service, medical or awards record, complete a Standard Form 180, (Request Pertaining to Military Records). All forms are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available free online. Mail the form to the address listed. More information on requesting service record information is available at National Archives and Records Administration.

Once eligibility has been established, joining is easy. Complete the membership application, enclose $25 for membership dues and a copy of your DD-214 or other proof of eligibility. Bring everything to our meeting which is held on the 6th floor of the Hospital Nacional Consultorio at 1:00 P.M. (1300 hrs), on the 2nd (second Friday) of each month: or send the packet to
